Uganda police force has confirmed that the captain of a boat that capsized in Lake Albert over the weekend killing at least 30 people, was Drunk.

More than 60 footballers and fans from Fofo landing site in Buseruka Sub County to Runga landing site in Kigorobya Sub County boarded the ill-fated boat for a friendly football match on Sunday afternoon when it capsized after setting off.

According to Julius Hakiza the Albertine region police spokesperson, the boat captain identified as Amon Mugisha was under the influence of alcohol having spent the whole day drinking before setting off for the journey. Mugisha has since been on the run.

32 footballers and fans were rescued by the local fishermen after the accident, police says. Hakiza says that so far only 16 bodies have been retrieved from the waters, adding that they intend to deploy marine police at all the gazetted landing sites on the Lake Albert shores.
