The police in Kampala have arrested former jailbird Dr Stella Nyanzi and four others for protesting against slow distribution of food and human rights abuses.

Those arrested along with Nyanzi are; Andrew Mukasa alias Bajjo, Shallon Kemigisha, Badru Kasule and John Bosco Serunkuma who were protesting near Buganda Road Court this morning.

In a video that spread like wild fire on social media, protestors held placards reading, "Children are hungry”, "Stop the lock-down oba tuffa tuffe, We want food.” The officers are also heard askin Stella Nyanzi who lay on the ground to get up.

Luke Owoyesigyire the deputy Police Spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Area, says the group is currently detained at Central Police Station on charges of inciting violence.

According to Nyanzi, she was taking a petition to the Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda protesting against the continued human rights abuses by security agencies which are enforcing the Presidential COVID-19 directives and failure by the government to distribute food to several vulnerable people.

“I just want food. My children are hungry, I just want food. Twagala emele, our government has not given us food, I have come with women to protest about food. The hunger is killing my children” Nyanzi wailed as police arrested her.

According to Isaac Ssemakadde Nyanzi’s lawyer, there's no legitimate basis for the arrest of the protestors and that government should respect the right to protest during a pandemic.
Nyanzi was in February released from Luzira where she spent was jailed for cyber harassment and offensive communication against President Yoweri Museveni.
